The portrait factory of the master from Delft | Reinier van Houten ...

Last Saturday I visited the Portrait Factory of Van Mierevelt exhibition at the Prinsenhof museum in the city of Delft. Although Van Mierevelt (1566-1641) was probably one of the most successful painters of his age, he is relatively unknown today. He mainly did portraits and he soon gained a respectable reputation with his portraits of Dutch Royalties. Soon followed by portraits of Dutch politicians, scientists and poets, which gave him even more fame and wealth.

What struck me was the mercantilism by which he treated portraiture. The factory fashion he used to literally turn out hundreds and hundreds of portraits (hence the title of the exhibition) and the numerous assistants he used. He even used a pricelist where people could order breast pieces (new or copies) or knee pieces (new or copies) in his shop (“winckel”) at standard rates. So, clearly, painting was doing business for Van Mierevelt. A way to make money, and the more, the better. He left 133.000 guilders when he died in 1641. This was a very huge fortune, given an average craftsman earned about 200 to 300 guilders a year. Many people see Henry Ford as the inventor of the assembly line, but with a bit of imiganation (and exaggeration) you might argue if Van Mierevelt beat him to it.

To meet the high demand, Van Mierevelt used a very efficient technique to produce high volumes of portraits. One of the things he used, were templates. He made a template of the main characteristics of a person’s face and used this to make copies and also to make “new” portraits of that same person over time. Below you see part of the portrait of Prince Maurice as painted by Van Mierevelt in 1607 on the left. Next to it you see him as painted in 1625. You would expect Prince Maurice would have posed a second time. Wrong! Van Mierevelt used a template (an imaginary sample is shown on the right) to get the characteristics of his face and just aged it a bit. If you like, a 17th century version of Photoshop!

There was a small reconstruction at the exhibition demonstrating how this technique actually worked. Van Mierevelt did all his portraits on wooden panels. After preparing the wood, he presumably used his template, which basically were lines of small holes through which he punched the pigment. This left a series of small dots on the wooden panel. The first image below shows this. Next, he connected the dots showing the contours of the face and gave a sort of sketched drawing. This remained the same throughout the years for one person. From there on he could paint the rest giving it the resemblance it needed without the need for the person to actually pose again.

I’m not saying Van Mierevelt was a kind of 17th century Bob Ross. He was a very skilled painter, who just happened to find an immensely efficient way of producing portraits that were in high demand in those days. It made Van Mierevelt a very wealthy man. It’s interesting to see, though, that many centuries later, his name has almost gone forgotten, whilst painters like Rembrandt, who had to struggle to survive during their lives, are now regarded as extra-terestial and whose work is invaluable today.

Of course, the question remains why such a largely popular and successful painter during his lifetime faded into oblivion today. To a large extent, I think, it has to do with his critics. His work was generally characterized as dull and boring. Not in its technique, but in the message it communicated. In the Criticizing Photographs course I’m following right now, there is a phase dedicated to this topic: Interpretation - what does the image tell you; what message did photographer try to communicate. In all honesty, Van Mierevelt’s portraits are not particularly strong in this area. They’re very accurate images of real life people. Nothing more, nothing less. All are more or less in the same pose. All are factual representations of reality. No to little attention has been given to their character, emotion, expression, etc. If you compare this with the work of Rembrandt, Vermeer, Hals and others – not just because of their excellent technique, but also because the strong message they communicate – you can understand why over time these painters are regarded as true Masters and the name of Van Mierevelt is hardly ever mentioned.

Overall pleased with how the second series of bases came out. I learned a lot about the mold making material we use (aka how much detail is can reproduce), most importantly every imperfection needs to be cleaned up before we cast.

Honestly I thought it would only take an hour or two to paint up all of the bases, between airbrushing the base coats on and a “simple” drybrush or two, but the more I worked with them the more fun I had! I spent 7 hours start to finish painting all of the bases yesterday while sitting at the bunker. I still need a better photo booth or post production program.

Basecoat:
Duplicolor Black auto primer
Vallejo Model Air Steel (1:1 mix with airbrush medium)
Games Workshop Badab Black wash (1:1 mix with airbrush medium)
Games Workshop Chainmail drybrush.
Details:
Greens: Games Workshop Dark Angels, Goblin, Snot
Blacks: Games Workshop Chaos Black, Codex Grey
Rust Effect: Game Workshop Scorched Brown, Vallejo Copper, water (4:1:3)
Oil Effect: Games Workshop Gryphon Sepia, Dublin Mud
Verdigris: Games Workshop Hawk Turquoise, Dark Angels Green, water (4:1:10)
Base Rim: Games Workshop Dark Flesh.

And my AdMech trooper

I would love feedback, both on this line and suggestions on what you would like to see next. Last how do you think my AdMech trooper looks on the base.

And feel free to look at my blog

Hobby Horse: It's Leap Day

Did you know that it takes the earth 365 days, 5 hours, 49 minutes and 16 seconds to revolve around the sun? Neither did I. But you probably did know that calendar years are measured in 365 days, and thus that each year there is a bit of extra time left over. So every four years we have an extra day to bring everything back in alignment.* It's called a leap day, hence the frog!

According to where you look on the web, the day is a good omen for starting something new. If you leap into something new on this day, it will be successful. With that in mind, I am treating today as the first day of a new push to improve my painting.

Maybe improve is not the word I am looking for. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say I am going to vary my painting. I tend to paint figures only if they add to my armies. This not only restricts my choice of what to paint, but it also ties me to painting to match my existing collection. While I am happy with my army painting, I never really step outside my comfort zone. I am not exactly stuck in a rut, but I do think that trying something new will ultimately improve my technique, or at least expand my skill set.

The biggest problem I have is the vast range of minis out there. Which should I paint now that I no longer have to confine myself to chaos warriors or undead (the two armies I am supposedly working on this year)? It's a conundrum, but I do have a few ideas, which I will be posting about in the next few weeks.

*the smartest among you will have realised that there is a discrepancy in these numbers, since there's a little less than 6 hours per year added, and that eventually those few minutes difference will add up. Which is why there is no leap day in centuries that are not divisible by 400. So don't leave it to 2100 to take up a new challenge!

Peugeot Citroën Improves Powertrain Digital Manufacturing ...

Dassault Systèmes , a world leader in 3D design, 3D Digital Mock Up and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) solutions, today announced that PSA Peugeot Citroën has deployed DELMIA in its powertrain division, extending Dassault Systèmes’ footprint in the digital manufacturing domain. Replacing solutions from the competition, DELMIA now supports assembly simulation, painting, factory layout, stamping and powertrain.

PSA Peugeot Citroën works with the same tools and methodologies inall major departments of the group.

Within the last few years, PSA Peugeot Citroën has introduced key technological innovations for powertrain, including significant R&D investments to develop and market a new generation of engines and transmissions. For example, the group is starting the production of a new DCT (Dual Stock Transmission) gear box with a double clutch, involving Dassault Systèmes’ DELMIA.

To support innovation and increase business agility, it is therefore crucial for PSA Peugeot Citroën to be able to make radical changes early in the powertrain manufacturing process without compromising the production schedule. DELMIA strongly contributes to this objective by ensuring high-level planning reliability along with optimized implementation times and costs. As a result, the group is able to master powertrain development times, reduce development and operating costs, optimize resources and investments, while improving quality. They also can perform economic simulations and evaluate production costs early in the development process.

Original Paint Time Capsule: 25k-Mile 1974 Porsche 914 For Sale

This 1974 Porsche 914 is about as original as we have seen, with the seller claiming 25k original miles and all factory paint and upholstery. The car was owned by the original buyer until 2010, with it being stored for 23 years. It was then purchased by the seller and extensively cleaned and brought back to mechanical health at great cost. It is now available here on 914 World forum in La Quinta, California for $21k. Special thanks to BaT reader Pete S. for this submission!

The seller shows extensive sphotos of the car disassembled for cleaning and body scrutiny. The blue paint is carried throughout the wheel wells, trunk, and beneath the bumpers. Even if it was a re-paint, this would be an unusually clean 914, but the seller claims all factory blue.

The interior was also disassembled to show the condition of the floor pan. Photos are also included showing the interior fully intact.

Some will think that this price should bring a 914-6, but that ship has sailed. If this was a factory 6-cylinder car in this condition we’d expect to see an asking price double or triple this level. This car at the top of the 4-cylinder 914 heap, but we suspect it will move along quickly if not be sold to Germany where someone in Stuttgart would pay this money in a heartbeat.

Meissen: the town and its porcelain

Being a passionate collector and admirer of early European porcelain, I had been very interested to read how Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony and Chinese porcelain fanatic, was desperate to crack the secret that the Chinese had held for so long. Augustus had been spending too big a portion of his annual royal budget on importing porcelain, and he believed it should have been possible to create porcelain at home. Equally exquisite, but far cheaper!

Each Elector of Saxony lived in Albrechtsberg castle, built in the C15th as a late Gothic royal residence. In 1705 Augustus the Very Strong set up a secret laboratory within his castle walls. He imprisoned the alchemist Johann Friedrich Boettger (1682-1719) and others in his castle and probably would have kept them there for life, in order to find the magical formula.

Fortunately for Boettger, he discovered the formula. The first successful experiment took place in 1708 and within two years, the good citizens of Saxony were delighted to see European-created porcelain. Augustus the Strong immediately turned part of his castle into a porcelain factory, with workshops for hundreds of designers and craftsmen. Security against prying (royal) eyes from Vienna and other cities was paramount.

Albrechtsburg Castle and the Meissen Cathedral above the River Elbe

By the end of the C19th, the factory moved out of the Albrechtsburg which was by then looking a bit tatty. So the residential palace was renovated and the space that had been utilised as a porcelain factory was opened as a historical museum to the glories of the Saxon past. City pride expanded and soon after, Meissen’s cathedral was crowned with the skeletal spires in the late Gothic style that now lend such drama to this city. By the 1880s, Meissen was offering a splendid package-deal for tourists.

Albrechtsburg Castle Museum, historical murals

Apparently the exhibition put on at the Albrechtsburg for the 300th anniversary of Meissen porcelain in 2010 was particularly impressive. The exhibition hall presented a fine analysis on three centuries of porcelain manufactured by hand, including the porcelain made for Catherine the Great of Russia and the famous 3.5 m high centrepiece created for the dining table of King Augustus III.

When Joe and I were in Dresden, we found a brilliant 4-hour tour of the medieval city on the banks of the River Elbe. Situated only 25km northeast of Dresden, it is clear that the historic town of Meissen still owes its international reputation to its famous porcelain factory Staatliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Meissen GmbH. Its 1720 logo of two crossed swords, on the bottom of each porcelain object, is one of the oldest trademarks in existence and is still a guarantee of quality across the world.

The crossed swords logo was introduced in 1720 to protect the company’s exclusivity.

We were taken on a walk through the winding and quite steep medieval streets, and very much enjoyed Albrechtsburg castle and adjacent cathedral. It is not a coincidence that Meissen's historical district is located close to the market at the foot of the castle hill.

But the highlight of the excursion for me was going through the showrooms of the Meissen factory. The tour began with a short film on the history of the factory, the raw materials used and the processes adopted. In the following four rooms, the visitors saw how Meissen porcelain was made by hand. Relief-moulded cups were thrown, and parts of figures cast, at the workbenches of a thrower and modeller. The fettler then joined the parts of a figure together. Underglaze painting was demonstrated and the tour concluded with a display of overglaze painting. Floral decorations and painting based on oriental motifs were used to illustrate this multifaceted technique with its extensive nuances of colour.

On leaving Meissen, the tour offered a chance to stop for photos at the magnificent Moritzburg Castle. Nestled among woods and lakes, the former hunting grounds of Augustus the Strong were seen en route back to Dresden. But I don’t remember Moritzburg.

A painted Meissen porcelain circular bowl and cover, mid-C18th, auctioned by Toovey’s.
A useful porcelain reference can be found in Country Life Travel (Winter 2011-2). For fine photos of Meissen's main architecture, see Bird of Prey's nest.
